A team of hackers operating under the name Wiikey, claims that it has managed to penetrate the protections of the Wii U home console in order to hack the device and reverse engineer elements like drive authentication and encryption.

Writing on their website, they state, “Yes, its real - we have now completely reversed the WiiU drive authentification, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for this next generation K3y. Stay tuned for updates!”

The process means that a solution can be devised to play pirated content on the Wii U.

Wiikey is known for creating one of the best chips on the market that allows for modding of the original Wii home console.

Nintendo is expected to deliver firmware updates in order to beef up the protection of the next-gen home console.

The company might also choose to ban those who go online with modded devices.
