Ubisoft has confirmed that a fraudulent request had been forwarded to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to retract the trademark for Watch Dogs and that it's working to reinstate it as soon as possible.

Earlier today, news appeared that the trademark for Watch Dogs was being retracted by Ubisoft itself, hinting at a possible cancellation or at least renaming of the game.

Now, Ubisoft has confirmed, via Kotaku, that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office received a fraudulent request from someone impersonating Ubisoft President Yves Guillemot to take down the trademark.

"We are working directly with the USPTO on reinstating the trademark for Watch Dogs and it will be active again in the coming days. The matter has no impact on the Watch Dogs' development," the publisher revealed.

As of yet, it's unclear who made the fraudulent request or what motives he or she had.
