The development team at Ubisoft is preparing the launch of the upcoming Watch Dogs with a real-world prank in Los Angeles, California, in which a number of unwitting smartphone users are tricked into believing they are able to influence events on an entire street.

The company explains, "An amazing smartphone app turns common people into powerful hackers and hidden cameras record their reaction as they unwillingly hack a street of Los Angeles. You won't believe what they do when the police show up!"

The official YouTube channel for the company also has a Making of feature about the publicity stunt, which gives more details about how it was setup and executed.

The prank is interesting because it highlights some of the major themes that Watch Dogs will tackle, including the power of hacking and the constant surveillance that surrounds us.

The game is set to be launched on the PlayStation 4 from Sony, the PC, the Xbox One from Microsoft, and current-gen consoles on May 27 of this year, after being delayed from 2013.

The game will put players in a future version of Chicago, where they will be free to explore the world and to choose how to track and defeat their enemies.
