Masahiro Sakurai, best known for his work on Kid Icarus and Super Smash Bros., says that the video game industry is relying too much on remakes and should focus more on delivering innovation.

He writes in a Famitsu column translated by Polygon that, “Compared to other media like movies, dramas, animation, novels and comics, the glut of franchises and remakes is at an unnatural level.”

The developer admits that games need to recycle control schemes and some core mechanics in order to make it easier for players to understand a new game.

At the same time, Masahiro Sakurai says that new features need to be added even to popular games in order to make them appealing in the long term.

At the moment, the developer is working on a Super Smash Bros. video game for the 3DS handheld and the Wii U home console, and his column suggests that fans should be ready for a number of new ideas.
