Virtual reality can become part of mainstream games

A lot of hype surrounded the reveal of the new Project Morpheus virtual reality headset from Sony, but it seems that both the new device and the older Oculus Rift need to achieve some solid sales before they actually become attractive to big game publishers.

Lionel Raynaud, a vice president in charge of creativity at Ubisoft, is skeptical that an Assassin’s Creed or a Far Cry title will support virtual reality in the coming years.

He is quoted by Gamespot as explaining during a round table discussion at the Game Developers Conference that, “VR would need to sell at least 1 million units to be viable for development.”

At the moment, the Oculus Rift is offered to developers only, but the kits have been bought by eager gamers who are interested in testing out the virtual reality tech.

At the same time, Sony says that Project Morpheus is still in the development stage and that it is only showing a prototype at the moment with a final version set to be offered to a larger audience before the end of the year.

The company says that the headset will arrive on the PlayStation 4 as soon as possible and with an affordable price point, no doubt supported by games created by internal studios.
