More transparency would lead to increased interest in the market

Yves Guillemot, the leader of publisher Ubisoft, believes that digital sales numbers for all video games should be public in order to counter the rather gloomy view promoted by the monthly sales reports from the NPD Group, which only track physical sales.

The executive is quoted by VG247 as saying that more transparency from all involved companies, including Activision or Electronic Arts, would generate growth.

He added, “When you can, you keep all your secrets. Everybody feels that if the other guys knew where they were getting their money from, competitors would jump on that.”

Recently, Ubisoft said that Blood Dragon, the digitally distributed spin-off from Far Cry 3, managed to sell more than half a million copies.

Traditionally, video game publishers tend to only talk about sales numbers when one of their games performs better than expected.
