Kalypso Media has announced that Tropico 5 add-on Waterborne will be released on December 17, adding water based-mechanics to the popular strategy title.

The publisher has also launched a teaser trailer for the expansion, showcasing some of the new things that players will be able to toy around with.

Tropico is a pretty popular series with fans of city-building and simulation titles, and the latest installment, Tropico 5, is the most ambitious yet, introducing a number of new gameplay systems as well as multiplayer.

You can read more about it in our Tropico 5 review, but in a nutshell, it's a sandbox game that enables you to become the ruthless dictator of your own tropical paradise. Of course, should you want to, you can also be a peaceful and benevolent leader, but where' the fun in that?

The Waterborne expansion will introduce a new campaign with 6 challenging missions, and you'll be able to build various off-shore structures around your island, providing you with an alternate means of producing food, energy, entertainment, and even housing your population.

Developer Haemimont Games has also added a bunch of gameplay enhancements such as water traffic, larger coastal areas, allowing you to take advantage of the new mechanics, as well as a series of new random events to keep you on your toes while developing your tropical utopia.
