Developer Jagex's upcoming Transformers Universe goes into open beta today, with a nice double-experience point weekend coinciding with the event.

Jagex is best known for making Runescape, but for Transformers Universe the dev took things into a different direction since the first announcement in 2011, making the game a third-person multiplayer online battle arena title, in which players duke it out with a range of different morphing robots from the Transformers franchise.

The game is free to play, available for Mac and Windows PC, and players can earn relics, the in-game currency, by performing various deeds on the field of battle, and then use them to recruit new combatants, buy upgrades and various Resprays to stand out in the heat of battle.

Of course, there is also the option to take a shortcut and buy everything with real money. Speaking of which, the open beta weekend has a lot of competitions running, by participating in which players have the chance to nab some real-cash prizes, as well as various in-game goodie bags.

If you are interested in giving Transformers Universe a spin, you can sign up for the beta free on the game's website, where you can also play the game, inside your web browser.
