James Russell, the lead game designer working on Total War: Rome II, says that the computer-controlled opponents in the coming strategy game will be able to evaluate each battle and actually retreat if the odds are against them.

The developer tells VG247 that, “if you attack an army it makes a judgement about whether you’re going to win that battle. If you’re more powerful than it then we actually have this situation where the higher the level of the AI the more likely it is to retreat, if it can.”

The Creative Assembly wants to make the Artificial Intelligence behave as a human player would in the same situation.

At the same time, tweaking the difficulty level will actually allow gamers to create an experience that suits their playing style.

Total War: Rome II will be launched on September 3 on the PC.
