The development team at The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA announce that the upcoming Total War: Rome II – Hannibal at the Gates campaign expansion will also deliver a new historical battle for gamer, the legendary engagement that took place at Cannae.

This is one of the most important engagements of the wars between Carthage and Rome and is still seen as one of the finest examples of tactics in combat in the Ancient world.

Games will be able to take control of either of the two armies as they face off near the town in Italy that gives the battle its name.

The development team explains on Facebook that, "By the summer of 216BC, Hannibal had won two major victories against Rome and occupied the town of Cannae. With Fabius Maximus’ strategy of cutting the Carthaginian supply lines and refusing open battle losing favour with the Roman Senate, it was now the lot of Lucius Paullus and Gaius Varro to secure victory."

Hannibal cleverly used the terrain and the assumptions made by his enemies to lure them into a trap, feigning a retreat with his center in order to draw the Romans in and then envelop them completely.

Hannibal at the Gates for Total War: Rome II will include a special Second Punic War campaign and will also add new factions.
