Nicolas Cantin, the game director working on the reboot of Thief, says that his team is actively working to eliminate the traditional art style of steampunk and replace it with a more realistic look that suits the gritty nature of the game world.

The developer tells GameInformer that, “The art style of steampunk is golden and wood – see Wild Wild West with Will Smith. It’s something we really want to get rid of. We’re really more about rusty stuff where you see the welding.”

Eidos Montreal wants to create a city that feels big and it is blending Victoria and medieval influences.

Thief will also make changes to how light is used, with an ever-present fog designed to give players cover while allowing them to see their enemies.

The reboot is expected to launch during 2014.
