Developer Ubisoft Montreal has confessed that the reveal of the upcoming open world action adventure game Watch Dogs during E3 2012 was premature.

According to a recent interview featured in the April 2014 issue of Edge magazine, Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin said that they were "forced" by the game's publisher to make the reveal in 2012.

"They forced us to go at E3 2012. Yves [Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft] was the one who wanted us to go at that E3, even though we felt it was a bit early. In the end I think he was right," Morin shared.

It appears that Guillemot's intuition served the game well. Ubisoft Montreal began working on the title for Windows PC because the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One didn't exist at the time, apart from a mere possibility and some rumors. This afforded the team the flexibility to adapt to different platforms, should the need arise.

Watch Dogs was initially supposed to come out in November last year, but the title got pushed back to Q2 2014 a month before the release date. The studio said that the delay was beneficial, because it allowed them to further work on the product, which is now set for release on May 27, on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, with a version for the Wii U scheduled to arrive sometime later during the year.
