A special episode could launch later this year

Telltale Games confirms that it's not going to release the long-awaited third season of its The Walking Dead adventure series, but it is, however, hinting at the debut of a potential standalone DLC episode for Season 2.

The Walking Dead episodic adventure series made by Telltale is a best seller, as millions of gamers and comic book fans have enjoyed the two seasons released so far by the independent developer.

Given their success, plenty of fans are hoping for a third season, which was confirmed for some time, to appear sooner rather than later.

According to Telltale's Job Stauffer, who confirms on Twitter, fans shouldn't expect The Walking Dead in 2015. Instead, it's quite likely that the new set of interactive episodes will appear in 2016, probably in the first few months.

Stauffer does leave the door open for another DLC episode for Season 2, as he does say that The Walking Dead might get some fresh content in 2015.

The game's first season received a similar treatment with the special 400 Days add-on, which was released a fair amount of time after the actual regular chapters and set the stage for the second season. Such a treatment is quite possible for Season 2 while leading up to Season 3's launch in 2016.
