Video game developer Funcom has announced the launch of a new browser-based social game called The Secret War, which is designed to promote the upcoming The Secret World MMO by encouraging players to spread the influence of their chosen secret society.

The game is played via Facebook and will match each player with a secret society based on his personality before asking them to recruit more agents that can help increase its power.

Morten Larssen, who is the senior vice president in charge of marketing at Funcom, stated, “One of the most interesting features of ‘The Secret World’ is the three profoundly different secret societies that players can join.”

He added, “Since we first announced the game we have gradually revealed more details about them, and what we have seen is that hundreds of thousands of gamers in our community have come to identify with them and form a loyal bond to other community members belonging to the same society. With ‘The Secret War’ experience we are excited about the prospect of allowing for even more community interaction and engagement.”

The Secret World will be launched later during the year and features a new take on familiar MMO elements like experience gain and classes.
