A live action movie version of the hit video game The Last of Us is at the moment in development at ScreenGems, with Neil Druckmann, the creative director for the title, currently working on the script for the big screen adaptation.

Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra are listed as creative architects and will be collaborating with game director Bruce Straley, director Sam Raimi, and his team at Ghost House Pictures banner.

Clint Culpepper, the president of Screen Gems, is quoted by Deadline as saying that "Screen Gems’ Brian Dukes and Eric Ling brought this game to my attention insisting we go after it, and when I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay."

Evan Wells says that Naughty Dog has talked with a number of other companies about a movie based on The Last of Us, and Screen Gems was the first one that offered high creative standards and shared the studio's creative vision.

It's unclear whether the movie version of the game will follow the exact same story or if changes are planned to the relationship between the two main characters.
