Capcom surprised many when they announced that the upcoming installment in the Ace Attorney series would be set in 19th century Japan, during the Meiji period, in a time where modern law was barely shaping up.

Series creator Shu Takumi along with producer Shintaro Kojima surprised the world once again, by announcing that The Great Ace Attorney will not only be a uniquely-themed game, but will also be the beginning of an entirely new series.

The reveal was made in the latest edition of the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu, when the two offered more details on the game's protagonists, Ryuunosuke Naruhodo – Phoenix Wright's ancestor – and his assistant, Susato Mikotoba.

"While it's not a main-numbered Ace Attorney title, it's the start of a new series called The Great Ace Attorney. I believe that it's becoming something that can show that it's not simply just a derivative title. We can't say too much about it for the time being, but we'll be revealing more on the characters and their backgrounds next time," Kojima revealed.

When asked about the two characters, the duo replied that Susato Mikotoba is "a graceful Japanese woman, a proper girl who does everything the proper way," while Ryuunosuke will be Phoenix's ancestor, which is pretty much self-explanatory.

The game is currently in development for the Nintendo 3DS platform, and the release date is yet to be announced.
