In a move that surprised the video game world, Don Mattrick, who was leading the team in charge of the Xbox One at Microsoft, announced that he was moving to take on the role of chief executive officer at social game developer Zynga.

Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft, has sent an internal memo to all employees, which thanks Mattrick for his work at the Xbox division and the way he dealt with the issues surrounding the reveal of the next-gen gaming device.

The executive says, according to AllGamesBeta, that "Don’s directs will report to me and will continue to drive the day-to-day business as a team, particularly focused on shipping Xbox One this holiday."

Ballmer declares himself proud of the work done on the Xbox One and adds, "Thank you, Don, for setting us on a path to completely redefine the entertainment industry."
