Valve has released some interesting figures regarding its contributor payout, revealing that the contributor base is pretty small, which in turn means that the payouts are pretty big.

During the summer of 2013, the company has revealed that Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 item creators have earned $10 /€7.5 million in royalties, and that Valve introduced the option for them to reward people who helped create the content on Steam Workshop.

The contributions are not subtracted from the item creator's royalty, but instead are redirected from Valve to the toolmakers.

During Steam Dev Days, the company has released more information on the matter, showing that the total payouts have gone to the creators of 2349 items, a total of 661 people, which correlates to an individual payout of $15k / €11k for 2013, as reported by The Verge.

The company has revealed that there are currently over 17 million Team Fortress 2 accounts, with close to 500 million total items available. They have also noted that 90 percent of models, maps and weapons in Team Fortress 2 are community-made.
