Teams are under pressure to reduce prices even as costs go up

The team that created Super Stardust believes that increased development costs and a pressure to reduce prices might threaten the downloadable video games market on the coming PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft.

Ilari Kuittinen, the chief executive officer at Housemarque, tells GamesIndustry.biz that, “During this console generation, there were only a handful of million-selling downloadable games, which is surprising to me as the console installed base for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade games is well over 150 million today.”

He believes that all projects for the next generation of devices need to generate more sales, which means more support coming from Microsoft and Sony.

Housemarque is at the moment getting ready to reveal a spiritual successor for the Super Stardust franchise that will be offered on the PlayStation 4.
