Developer Area 52 together with license holders LucasArts and Disney announce that they are launching a new free-to-play space combat game based on Star Wars, called Attack Squadrons, which is designed to allow 16 players to launch tense dogfights in some of the unique locations of the franchise.

Gamers will be able to choose missions that focus on base defense or they can simply fly into space to take out other teams or other single pilots.

Each ship created in Star Wars: Attack Squadrons can be fully customized both in terms of cosmetics and actual abilities in space and more upgrades and items can be unlocked when a player is successful in battle.

The developers are promising more content each month.

The launch of Attack Squadrons comes just as a space battle mechanic is being added to the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is being developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts.
