Stardock has begun the development process, but they are too far off to set a date yet

Stardock’s next Star Control title will be a prequel, with the action set around 40 years before the events of Star Control 2.

Stardock acquired the rights to the Star Control franchise in mid 2013, planning to reboot the franchise in a manner similar to what Firaxis did with X-COM.

According to CEO Brad Wardell, the decision to make the new game a prequel was made in case the creators of the original series, Fred Ford and Paul Reich, should decide to pick up where they left things off.

The two are currently involved with Activision, and therefore cannot officially take part in Stardock’s development process.

“We plan to start the game around 2112 with aliens first contacting the Earthlings and the formation of Star Control,” Wardell detailed during his interview with ArsTechnica.

He stated that for now, the game is so far off that a release date cannot even be considered, and that an announcement will probably arrive no earlier than 2015.
