Video game developer tinyBuild says that it plans to launch its 2D platformer SpeedRunners for free in order to get a large number of players interested in it while charging those who want to take the experience online.

Alex Nichiporchik, a developer working on the title, is quoted by VG247 as saying that, “The local version of SpeedRunners will be available completely free, you’ll be able to download it and play with your friends on a couch, or use any of the offline features (right now we have bots to play against offline).”

His team sees the online multiplayer as a service that the company is offering to players and that’s why it will be linked to a payment system.

The developer believes that offering gamers value is the only way of making sure that indie titles do not fall prey to the phenomenon of piracy.
