Just a small slice of the way the game mixes fantasy and humor

One of the first moments when South Park: The Stick of Truth messed with my expectations and truly shone for me was when I accidentally stumbled on the secret Mongol plot to take over the town’s Chinese restaurant, and I was forced to fight the horde in order to liberate it.

I admit that my knowledge of the actual animated series has grown spotty in the last few years, as I have only found time to watch those episodes that come highly recommended by friends who are hooked on it.

I do not know whether the Mongols made an appearance on the show, and that made the surprise of finding them all sitting at a table munching on their own beef one of the best moments of my first few hours with South Park: The Stick of Truth.

They invade the place owned by Mister Kim and make him miserable in the process, leading him to deliver a torrent of expletives when the player arrives.

Without wondering about the kid covered in home-made armor and using a box and cane to attack other children, he quickly enlists the gamer’s help to remove the Mongol horde from his restaurant, using the very simple solution of beating up their kids.

This leads to a couple of rather complex battles against Mongol groups of armored children, who have pretty solid attack abilities and really tested my ability to block at the right time and to use my special abilities to the fullest.

I was only level 2 at the time and pretty underpowered, so when I reached the roof I was pretty surprised to see that the entire Mongol horde, with warriors clad in armor and fire arrows at the ready, was now challenging my power in order to avenge their kids.

South Park has its share of outrageous moments, and this was just an appetizer of what was to come, but the battle was pretty hard, challenging my own character and Butters to constantly down healing potions and cures in order to remove the fire effects that were affecting us and replenish health.

Meanwhile, we chipped away at the HP of the enemy using mostly our special attacks and finally defeated them with little health remaining.

The reward is a special summon that makes regular future battles much easier to complete, which includes mister Kim assuming a special powerful form which involves a hilarious sword dance.
