Shuhei Yoshida, the leader of the Sony Worldwide Studios, says that the new version of the PlayStation Vita that his company is creating is designed to increase the installed base for the device, although direct competition with the Nintendo 3DS has not been mentioned.

He tells GamesIndustry.biz that, “the new PS Vita is slimmer and lighter, easier to hold, has some internal memory from the get-go, so it’s a bit more value – but the important thing is to continue to provide great games and game experiences.”

The 3DS has been outperforming the Vita, but the launch of the PlayStation 4 home console might turn the tables because the Sony handheld will be used as companion device.

The Gaikai streaming service will be used to allow PS4 titles to be played via the Vita remotely.

A bundle of the two devices might also be offered in 2014.
