Sony announces that it has reset the PlayStation Network account passwords for a small number of European gamers and all those affected will need to change it in order to access the service.

A statement on the official support forums says that, "We monitor PSN account for any irregular activity. If such activity is detected we will sometimes reset passwords."

It adds, "This was done purely as precautionary measure and there was no specific evidence that any accounts had be compromised."

Sony has not made it clear if all European PSN users are affected or if only a small number that share a particular characteristic has been targeted.

The company also says that it can offer no more details on the situation because doing that would affect its ability to protect PSN from attacks, so something serious is certainly happening behind the scenes.

The official support forums should be used by all those who are unable to change their PSN password.
