Hi-Rez Studios, the development team behind the Smite Multiplayer Online Battle Arena title, announces that the prize pool for the upcoming world championship for the title has gone over the 2 million dollar mark (1.6 million Euro), which is more than what rival League of Legends offered in 2014 for a similar event.

The money is being gathered from dedicated players via the Odyssey, an in-game promotion which delivers exclusive content, and a portion from each micro-transaction is increasing the overall prizes that will be offered on January 11, when the competition ends.

The Smite world championship will take place in the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta.

Gamers can attend in person or they can watch all the matches on Twitch.

Smite was launched in March 2014 and has managed to get a solid and stable audience of about 6 million players, lagging behind only League of Legends from Riot Games and DOTA 2 from Valve when it comes to the size of the community.

The experience is built around the gods of a variety of mythologies, all of which have access to powerful weapons and abilities, with gamers able to choose their favorite and engage in battle on both the PC and the Xbox One.
