Video game developer Sledgehammer says that the Call of Duty video game it is currently working on, set to launch during the coming year, will start an entirely new era for the massive first-person shooter franchise.

The company is not willing to offer any sort of details on the mechanics or the story of the experience it is working on.

The message does suggest that Sledgehammer is not working on the Black Ops universe, which is under the leadership of Treyarch, or the Ghosts continuity, which currently belongs to Infinity Ward.

Publisher Activision says that it is moving to a three-year development cycle for the Call of Duty series, which will probably increase the overall quality of the franchise.

The 2014 installment that Sledgehammer is working on will probably be offered on the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, the PC, the Wii U and current-gen consoles.
