The update to the PlayStation Store that's due out today will allow players to duke it out in Skullgirls Encore completely free on the PlayStation 3, provided of course that they have an active sub to a PlayStation Plus account.

Skullgirls is Lab Zero Games' take on the fighting game genre, a fast-paced 2D arcade brawling game with cartoonish visuals and a unique Dark Deco aesthetic, complete with a cast of diverse and crazy characters.

Skullgirls was initially released in 2012, receiving universal praise for the level of detail of its sprite and background art, as well for its fun, challenging but accessible combat system.

The Encore stands for the re-released version of the game, after co-publishers Autumn Games and Konami parted ways at the end of last year, which entailed some issues for the devs. They managed to circumvent them in the meanwhile, and come January this year, Skullgirls emerged yet again, with the Encore particle attached, and some added bonuses.

Skullgirls Encore included new systems, new stages, new music, a ton of balance adjustments and gameplay tweaks, and more, and Lab Zero continues to add content to the game on a regular basis.

PlayStation Plus subscribers can also access discounted in-game currency and add-ons for Dead or Alive 5 ultimate, as well as for Dust 514, Blacklight Retribution, Warframe, and the other featured free-to-play games, throughout the course of the entire week.
