The development team at Maxis and publisher Electronic Arts announce that they are launching a new piece of downloadable content for SimCity, which is created in collaboration with the American Red Cross.

Each purchase will see money delivered to disaster areas and gamers will be able to build a new Red Cross Relief Center, which will generate vehicles in order to deal with the effects of natural events in a gamer's city.

Neal Litvack, the chief development officer of the American Red Cross, states on the official SimCity blog that, "Our creative partnership with EA will inform players of the key services that the Red Cross provides during real world disasters."

"This will bring the Red Cross mission to the public and consumers in an exciting and interactive way while raising funds to support the work of the Red Cross to provide humanitarian services around the world where it is needed most," he adds.

The new DLC will be offered for one full year and EA will only recover development costs, with all extra revenue donated to the Red Cross.
