The developers at Maxis who are currently working on Sim City 5 have stated that the game will use a new cloud based save system which will constantly watch the play session and will permanently upgrade the image of the game on a remote server.

The idea is to link players that are engaged in single-player sessions and create an eco-system where gamers need to worry about more than the consequences in their current session.

The main example given is that of pollution, which will affect those who have cities near each other on a world map and will need to be dealt with collectively.

Maxis also said that Sim City 5 is designed to support a new philosophy, called “play anywhere,” which might mean that at least some of the game elements will be available via a browser-based interface.

The development team also mentioned that the new GlassBox engine might be used for future spin-offs like SimCopter and SimTower.
