Sid Meier, the industry legend who created the Civilization turn-based strategy franchise, says that he is not interested in using the Kickstarter crowd funding service because it forces developers to lock down ideas early in the development process.

The designer currently leading Firaxis tells GamesIndustry.biz that, “I really enjoy the luxury of changing my design and evolving over time. I’d be a little concerned with Kickstarter if I committed to X, Y and Z and I found out down the road that Z didn’t work very well, I kind of promised to do this.”

Sid Meier acknowledges that some teams might do well using Kickstarter and says that interesting strategy titles could be created using crowd funding.

Firaxis is currently putting the finishing touches on Brave New World, the second expansion for Civilization V.
