Publishers need to make sure that they have a better connection with players and also need be more open about digital distribution if they want to be able to compete with smaller and better connected teams, according to a veteran adventure game creator.

Ron Gilbert, who is currently working on the Kickstarter-funded Double Fine project, has told GameFront that, “I think they are going have to because the world is changing and small developers are getting these personal relationships with their fans and people that play the games.”

“I think the really big publishers need to embrace that or they’re really gonna miss this whole kind of revolution that’s happening right now,” he then mentioned.

Schafer went directly to his fans when no other publisher would green light his project to create a classic adventure game and managed to secure the resources he and Double Fine needed by using Kickstarter, a crowd-funding service.

The title should be launched during 2013.
