Smaller developers would benefit from less restrictions

Simon Vikland, a developer working for Overkill Software, says that both the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the unannounced Xbox 720 from Microsoft will allow companies to publish patches for their games without going through the long and expensive certification process.

He tells The Official Xbox Magazine that "I’ve heard stories that for the next generation, they’re making it possible to self-publish patches. That’s a rumour. And that would be nice."

The developer understands why console creators would be interested in keeping total control of their devices, but he also believes smaller creators would benefit from a more open process.

Self-published patches will also allow indie teams, which typically have limited resources, to launch their titles on next-generation consoles.

At the moment, Overkill is working on Payday 2, which will be delivered later during the year.
