Rift, one of the MMOs that was widely tipped as a challenger for World of Warcraft, has increased its success by transitioning from a time to a level-limited trial period.

Jim Butler, who is the core marketing executive at Trion Worlds, has stated, “The numbers clearly show that it’s working.”

He added, “Moving from a time-limited trial to a level-limited one allows players to fully experience the game without worrying that a late night at work or a movie with friends will cause them to miss something.”

Despite the fact that a free trial linked to the character level practically makes part of the MMO part of the free-to-play genre, the company executive believes that the subscription-based model still has plenty of life left in it.

At the moment most of the MMO experiences use microtransactions to generate revenue and the most recent release to stick with a subscription model is Star Wars: The Old Republic from BioWare and Electronic Arts.
