Teams should be more interested in innovative gameplay

John Riccitiello, the former leader of publisher Electronic Arts, says that mobile gaming does not need to focus on three dimensional graphics in order to create interesting experiences and sell copies.

The executive tells Polygon that during his time with EA, many teams were attempting to create graphics that rivaled those of home consoles while failing to focus on unique gameplay experiences.

He says, “Investing in better graphics without figuring out what differentiating gameplay you’re going to have - without thinking of how gameplay rewards players - is a road to ruin. Prettier games cost more to make. Better games satisfy consumers.”

Since Riccitiello has left, Electronic Arts has not chosen a chief executive officer although the company says that it is considering a number of individuals for the position.

The recent financial report from the publisher highlights a big increase in revenue derived from the digitally distributed space.
