Gamers need to make sure to turn off their devices

A report from Carnegie Mellon suggests that gamers who use gaming consoles are wasting a lot of energy by allowing them to go into an idle state rather than turning them off when they are not in use.

The report says that a whopping 68 percent of the energy used by gaming consoles is linked to their idle state.

The consumption amounts to 10.8 TWh and the estimated cost for the year 2010, when the number of consoles was significantly smaller than today, is of 1.24 billion dollars (945.5 million Euro).

The situation could be improved with both better power management from the next generation of home gaming consoles and by informing players about the strain that the idle state places on the energy grid and on the resources of the planet.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft has yet announced clear plans for a new generation of gaming platforms.

The Nintendo made Wii U will launch this year.
