An adventure game that follows two characters in an intertwined story

Memoria is an ambitious project, an adventure title from Daedalic that aims to tell two parallel stories set a few hundred years apart, starring two very different protagonists.

The one that most players will connect with is Sanja, a princess that follows in the footsteps of powerful rulers and who is searching for a mighty artifact.

She seems smart, a little aloof and very capable, but we soon discover that she basically failed to complete her quest.

Half a millennium later, Geron is aiming to retrace her moves and find out what happened, using his own unique power and fragments of information from the game world.

The developers are promising that as the game progresses, the actions of the two characters will influence the story, leading to a surprising climax in the seventh chapter of Memoria.

The game looks very good, with hand-drawn backgrounds and art, which suggest a lush world that’s affected by a great trauma, although a little more detail for the characters would have been nice.

The universe is based on a role-playing system called The Dark Eye and it’s a pleasure to deal with a fiction that does not retrace the familiar path of all other Dungeons & Dragons stories, although for some, the lack of familiarity might be a long-term problem.

I admit to being a little worse that the average player when it comes to classic adventure games and their puzzles, which means that, at times, the demo for Memoria managed to stop my progress dead in its tracks.

I am therefore happy to report that Daedalic has included the option of showing off all interesting elements in the room with a push of the Backspace key and it is also introducing a hint system to offer extra help.

Take a look at Memoria in action in the attached video, with the voice work in the game in the native German of the development team.
