Can the new racing simulator for the PS3 impress with its free trial or does it need work?

Gran Turismo 5 impressed millions of PlayStation 3 owners despite the lengthy delays that have plagued the racing experience.

Now, Sony and its Polyphony Digital studio are preparing Gran Turismo 6, the next installment in the racing simulator series.

With the promise of an improved engine, a reworked physics mechanic, and other different augmentations, the game is looking set to be a new step forward for the franchise.

Does it succeed in taking this step or does it trip up? Let's have a quick look at its demo.

Gran Turismo 6 is out at the end of the year, but Sony decided to release a fully-functional demo in order to get fans excited about the racing simulator experience, but also to get the best players into the 2013 edition of the GT Academy program.

The game features a variety of tracks, including the Silverstone one, and allows players to control different Nissan cars like the electric Leaf or the more conventional 370Z.

Players are guided by the winner of the 2011 edition of GT Academy, Lucas Ordonez, who helps them get to know the mechanics of the racing game and the different systems that compose it.

In terms of differences between Gran Turismo 5 and this new version, there aren't that many, unfortunately. The graphics look largely the same, although the few cars are a bit more impressive than in GT5.

The physics system feels a bit different than in GT5, as the cars behave a bit more realistically. The brakes, however, are quite strong and, when fully pressed, will stop the vehicle much faster than anticipated. This leads to a few awkward moments if you're following the racing line, as it recommends players brake without taking into account the actual stopping power.

The AI is largely the same and, at least in the standard setting, won't put up a fight, so veterans will have to make do with turning off the different assists and drive using their own skills.
