Is this videogame tie-in for the movie any good or does it sink in the ocean?

Videogame tie-ins for movies aren’t something new, but a title made after Battleship, a movie based itself on a game, albeit a board one, is certainly something out of the ordinary.

As such, we now get to admire Battleship, a game made by Double Helix studios and published by Activision for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

With the promise of combining first-person shooter action with some strategic elements borrowed from the traditional Battleship experience, the game seems to be an interesting hybrid. Does it succeed or should it sink to the bottom of the ocean? Let’s find out.

The Battleship game doesn’t really start out that well, as you actually wake up on a tropical island that, honestly, looked better in Far Cry 1 many years ago.

You play as a sort of military support specialist who needs to go around the island and defuse ordinance. You also get to carry a special command console that allows you to move the navy ships around the island.

As you can imagine, it’s not long before aliens start their invasion and you’re forced to pick up your weapons and start fighting the invading forces.

While it’s basically a rehashed Call of Duty clone in terms of shooting, with almost the same controls and mechanics, Battleship’s only distinctive feature is the fact that the ships you ordered around are engaging the enemy and, when placed into certain support positions on the map, can actually help you on the island with things like artillery strikes.

What’s more, when you collect certain Wild Cards, you actually get to control a ship and help it take down enemy vessels in the area, albeit in a limited way (you only get to fire its weapons).

Besides this, Battleship doesn’t really have that many interesting features, judging by the first mission, which you can check out in the video above.
