A tower defense experience with some interesting twists

Prime World Defenders is a rather classic tower defense video game with some interesting twists, but it’s still unclear whether the experience is unique enough to keep gamers occupied in the long term in a genre that’s getting extremely crowded.

The core concept is pretty simple and should be familiar to most players: an assortment of towers needs to be carefully placed on a route along which enemies attack.

A crystal needs to be protected from the crawling enemies and the power of the towers can be supplemented with an assortment of powerful spells.

As Prime World Defenders progresses, the scenarios become more complex, the enemies get tougher, they move faster and they have other tricks, like flying, to confuse the player and breach his carefully constructed defenses.

Gamers also get access to a number of new toys, including improved towers and a number of magic spells that, when carefully used, can thin an enemy wave enough to torn a previously impossible to complete level into a manageable experience.

Towers, magic and artifacts come in card form and Prime World Defenders challenges the player to manage and upgrade them in order to create a unique deck that suits his play style and is well adapted to the kinds of enemies that he will face.

The biggest weakness for the preview version of the game I tried is the fact that the story is incredibly weak, a laundry list of fantasy clichés that most players will simply ignore.

But developer Nival Red clearly understands what makes tower defense such an engaging experience for gamers and is trying to keep the core game as classic as possible while adding some innovative elements in order to make Prime World Defenders as unique as possible within the rules of the genre.

The game can become rather hard pretty fast and finding the best way to get through a stage is an enjoyable experience, if sometimes a little frustrating.

Prime World Defenders is set to be launched via Steam on May 21 and those who are interested in the experience can now pre-order the game.
