Sony notes the side effect of allowing pre-owned games on the PS4

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan believes that retail stores have a lot to benefit from the PlayStation 4's lack of used games digital rights management (DRM) systems, as they'll still be able to operate this business.

The PS4 impressed millions of gamers from around the world at E3 2013 earlier this month when Sony confirmed that no limitations will be imposed on pre-owned copies of PS4 games.

This measure will not only benefit gamers but also retailers, as SCEE boss Jim Ryan told VG247 that the retailer ecosystem is a "somewhat fragile one."

"We all know just how difficult it is for retailers, and while we’re never going to make a policy decision to cushion the lives of video game retailers in a particular market, it’s a factor that we need our retail partners to survive and hopefully prosper. That very fragile ecosystem is one I feel shouldn’t be lightly tampered with."

The Xbox One's DRM policy change was also saluted by GameStop, one of the biggest games retailers in the world.
