The launch of the PlayStation 4 home console has generated a big increase in terms of business for the game-focused division at entertainment juggernaut Sony during its third final quarter, with a boost in sales of 64 percent.

The overall value is 4.2 billion dollars (3.1 million Euro) and even operating income has grown in spectacular fashion, by more than 300 percent, says VG247.

Sony says that it has sold a combined 7.8 million units of the PlayStation 4 and the PS3 during the tracked period, while numbers for the classic PlayStation Portable and the Vita reached 2 million.

Overall, game sales for all these hardware devices have reached 126 million, both retail packages and digitally distributed titles.

Sony has already said that it is very happy with sales of the PlayStation 4 and that it wants to improve the performance of the Vita in the coming months.
