Sony and Microsoft want to avoid stagnating sales on launch

The coming PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox 720 from Microsoft will be cheaper than the current generation of consoles were on launch because both companies want to increase sales and enjoy short-term commercial success.

Michael Pachter, an analyst working for Wedbush Morgan, is quoted by GamesIndustry as saying that, “It is likely that the next Xbox will appear more affordable to many consumers than currently anticipated, and it may capture market share faster than many expect.”

He also believes that Sony will match Microsoft’s move in order to make sure that it does not lose sales.

If the prices of the next generation of devices are above the median, then the analyst sees the entire industry stagnating.

Both the Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4 are expected to launch before the all-important Christmas shopping season.
