Sources are suggesting that Sony and Viacom have signed a long-term deal that will allow streaming television to be delivered to the coming PlayStation 4 home console when it launches later in the year.

Anonymous individuals that are familiar with the deal are quoted by VG247 as saying that the programming block that Sony and Viacom have negotiated will compete directly with traditional television delivered via cable and satellite.

Apparently, the PS4 will be an early beneficiary of the team and there are plans to expand the service to the Vita, smart television sets, mobiles and tablets.

It seems that Sony is also in talks with other big media companies, including Walt Disney, Time Warner, CBS.

For the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, both console makers have promised extensive entertainment content other than gaming.

Microsoft has an exclusive deal for the United States linked to NFL content.
