Sony initially envisioned the PlayStation 4 with 4GB of RAM, hoping that the faster GDDR5 format would make up for the smaller amount of memory, but feedback from game developers made it clear that 8GB was the ideal size.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have 8GB of RAM but, initially at least, it seems that Sony was content with fitting only 4GB into its PS4.

According to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, however, this amount was doubled after hearing a lot of feedback from actual game developers who wanted more RAM to make their games even better.

"And because we chose expensive memory…we really liked the performance, but it's pricey, right? So going to 8GB was a bit of a business decision," Yoshida told IGN. "But we were able to make that decision because of a lot of the feedback from developers."

The gamble paid off and the PS4 is currently in a better position than the Xbox One in terms of performance, at least according to some developers.
