The same "play as you download" technology will be used for retail games

Sony has confirmed that, through the same technology that will help PlayStation 4 owners play games while they're being downloaded, they'll also be able to play retail titles without having to wait to install them off the Blu-ray disc.

Quite a few PlayStation 3 games have mandatory installations, as usually a portion of data from the Blu-ray disc needs to be transferred onto the hard drive for easier access.

On the PlayStation 4, according to Sony's Neil Brown, via OPM, there will be a special system that allows owners to start playing a game without having to wait for an installation.

While this will result in longer loading times in the first few minutes, the game will pick up its pace once all the files are on the hard drive.

Sony impressed quite a few potential PS4 owners earlier this year when it confirmed that, thanks to a special game packaging system, those who download titles via the PS Store can start playing them before the transfer is actually finished.
