The game might not feature them at launch but they could appear in the future

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare might not feature microtransactions at least at first, as developer PopCap wants to make players earn in-game currency so that they can upgrade their characters.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare allows players to take control of plants or zombies and fight it out on different maps. Each playable character has a variety of modifications in the form of stickers that can be bought from an in-game store.

The store includes various sticker packs, in a similar way to the gear boxes from Mass Effect 3's multiplayer.

But, while ME3 had a microtransaction system that also allowed players to buy the new gear with real-life money, not just in-game credits, PopCap is undecided about the method of giving new content to players.

"We haven't actually figured out yet whether we're going to allow packs to be bought with real money," producer Brian Lindley told GameRevolution. "I think we'll probably launch using just in-game currency before we turn any other options on."

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare launches in February for Xbox One and Xbox 360, and soon after on PC.
