John Smedley, the leader of Sony Online Entertainment, says that the PlayStation 4 version of Planetside 2 has the potential to attract a lot of players to the new Sony home console, effectively serving the same marketing role as Halo on the Xbox line of hardware.

The executive tells IGN that, “We believe that Planetside 2 is going to be the massively multiplayer Halo for PlayStation 4, so we want to bring a completely new kind of gameplay to a completely new audience.”

Planetside 2 is at the moment offered on the PC under a free-to-play model and allows gamers to create a character and then join up with friends while fighting massive continent spawning battles.

Smedley says that it does not want PC MMO players to switch to the PlayStation 4 and it seems that SOE does not have plans to offer a character transfer service for the game.

Planetside 2 will be launched on the PS4 in early 2014.
