Traditionally, the world of sports and the world of video games intersect to create simulation titles, like the very popular FIFA and NBA series from EA Sports and 2K Sports, but Japan seems decided to break the mold by announcing that Pikachu, the best-known character from the Pokemon line-up, is the official mascot for the coming 2014 World Cup 2014 campaign.

The official site of The Pokemon Company and the Adidas site both reveal the news and explain that it is linked to the Engine Project from the sports apparel company, which is designed to increase the unity of the Japanese football team and the fans that support it.

The promotional features are currently limited to images of the iconic Pokemon character using the official team kit for Japan, but more interesting cross-overs might be announced in the coming weeks.

Pikachu is very popular in the video game world and it would be impressive to see Nintendo delivering some special World Cup 2014 related content for Pokemon X & Y.

At the moment, fans of the football competition will be able to experience it in virtual form using the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil from EA Sports, which will be out in the middle of April.
