Thomas Johansson, the lead designer of the Wealth of Nations expansion for Europa Universalis IV, believes that the trade-focused content will add new layers of conflict to the grand strategy experience.

He tells Awesomeoutof10 that, “You dominate a certain trade node, and you look where it feeds in to dominate the next trade node. We’re not going to change the trade nodes per see, we’re going to focus on things that create conflict and friction and facilitates deals around the trade system.”

The team is adding privateers to the game in order to allow gamers to disrupt the flow of trade without declaring open war.

Wealth of Nations has also introduced trading companies, which can take control of some provinces and make them more relevant for the trade process.

The Europa Universalis IV expansion is set to be launched before spring is over via digital distribution.
